Toasters That Actually Burn Morning News

You might have seen various types of toasters having grills in different shapes, the jumping toasters, browning toasters, etc. But have ever seen a toaster that can burn any design on your bread slice as you like, or how about reading your morning newspaper at the breakfast table with your toasted bread slice in your hand rather than the traditional newspapers
Electrolux has invented a (kind of) digital toaster, which sports capability to burn patterns, designs or even news on your morning bread slice. It can burn just any shape or size or text or even your picture on the bread.
The toaster connects to your PC via USB and downloads the latest news headlines. It can then burn it on to the bread slice.
The toaster consist of a network of toasting “modules” which are heated by a hot wire. Each module can move around by 30°. When the user selects what has to be burned on to the bread, these modules get in action. They align themselves in such a pattern to burn the selected image or text on to the bread slice.
This toaster was first demonstrated at a design competition held by Electrolux and the person who made this thing is Sung Bae Chang. The company has not yet announced any plans for its large scale production.
So if in future this thing gets in production, you will be able to actually digest the daily spicy news. Or it could fulfil your dream of eating anything like a building or a plane or a chicken (if you are a vegetarian) or even a girl.

Nokia to Launch 40 Green Mobile Phones

World’s top cell phone maker, Nokia is planning to launch around 40 new green phone models this year — each comprising biodegradable components that can be easily recycled.
Normal
mobile phones are not biodegradable. They contain small amounts of potentially harmful substances such as cadmium, lithium, among others, in their batteries which, if not managed properly, can damage the environment.
Announcing the launch, D Shivakumar, VP and managing director,
Nokia India, said, “We will be using biodegradable phone covers, recyclable battery designs that use less harmful toxic materials and energy efficient accessories for all our forthcoming phones. Already, we have eliminated the use of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in all our phones.”

The green phones, which we will launch this year, will be introduced across all price ranges,” he added. “The consumer simply places the contents in the bag and then puts it in their mailbox. We are evaluating similar refurbishment processes for India, which is the second-largest telecom market,” added Shivakumar.
Nokia has already launched an eco-friendly phone,
Nokia 3110, which the company claims is 65 per cent recyclable. Also, it is working towards reducing the energy consumed by mobile chargers up to 50 per cent.
Nokia also plans to open up ‘Green Bins’ across all Nokia dealers in India, where customers can dispose of their old mobile phones for recycling. The company also stated that the number of materials that cannot be recycled in the mobile phone can be reduced by using Biomaterials like polylactic acid plastics with plant or other biomass based modifiers such as biodegradable
phone cover and battery.

Cricket Ball with Inbuilt Speedometer Technology for Live Speed Measurement

A cricket ball has been developed which can measure its own speed and display the ball speed measurement on the tiny LCD screen on one side, it also comes with a inbuilt long lasting battery. Until now radar guns have been used to measure the bowling speeds of bowler and there’s always been a curiosity among the cricket fans in deciding the “world’s faster bowler “, with the new Speedsensor measuring technology inside the ball itself it might become possible to get the accurate speed measurement and thereby giving the crown to the one who deserves it.
How it works:
The inbuilt Speedsensor measures the speed of bowl between the time when it first gets released from the bowler hand and until it hits something(preferably nets) whereas the Radar gun reads out the speed between the point when the bowl gets released from bowlers hand and strikes the pitch.
Well the ball in question is not for actual cricket its just meant for measurement purposes, the manufacturers claim that the ball sensors could get damaged if hit hard directly by the cricket bat so its only meant for measuing speeds on the nets only.
It comes with a three year
battery life with price tag of US $45( around Rs 1800)

Samsung stealing iPhone thunder?

I was quite impressed with the iPhone, as were many others as evidenced by the run-up of Apple's stock in the hours after its announcement. After a few days, however, sobriety set in and I had a few iPhone-related concerns that I included in a blog post. One of those issues questioned how successful Apple would be in preventing similar phones from stealing some of the iPhone's thunder.Well, perhaps "stealing its thunder" is the wrong term to use, because the iPhone could be part of a UI trend that has culminated this year and created phones of which Apple's offering is a notable example. That, at least, is what one could conclude from pictures of a new phone from Samsung (the development of which clearly had to parallel that of the iPhone). Not only does the phone have a touchscreen, but as the photos show, it also has a keyboard hidden underneath. The entire UI is created in Flash, implying a level of UI customizability which doesn't currently exist for the iPhone. Plus, it enables viewing of HTML pages the way god intended them to be viewed. Last, it's 3G, vs. the iPhone's much slower EDGE (or in some cases, GPRS) data connection.I don't know how it sizes up in other areas that matter to business people, such as Exchange integration, but it seems to fill a lot of the gaps in the iPhone, even if it doesn't have Apple's carefully cultivated invidious distinction (I know you don't agree with my use of that term, Anton). As noted by others, Apple isn't walking into a market where there are no serious competitors. This is a market with lots of players, lots of competition, and lots of good design ideas from companies around the world. I have nothing but respect for Apple's hardware design skills. The phone market, however, is different than the market for iPods. It will be a hard slog. That doesn't mean, however, that I'm not happy Apple is going to try it.

Google signs on with Open Invention Network

Google announced today that the company is officially joining the Open Invention Network (OIN) by becoming a licensee. OIN licensees agree not to assert their patents against the Linux software ecosystem and in exchange gain royalty-free access to the OIN's collection of over 100 patents on critical technologies.

Google has invested a considerable amount of money in a wide variety of open-source software development projects in the past, perhaps most notably through its Summer of Code program. Google also makes extensive use of open-source technologies internally, so it isn't particularly surprising that the company is willing to make a cross-licensing agreement with the OIN. Google has nothing to lose and much to gain by entering into an agreement that protects Linux while also giving the company unfettered access to OIN patents. "Linux plays a vital role at Google, and we're strongly committed to supporting the Linux developer community," Google open-source programs manager Chris DiBona said in a statement. "We believe that by becoming an Open Invention Network licensee, we can encourage Linux development and foster innovation in a way that benefits everyone. We're proud to participate in OIN's mission to help Linux thrive."
Software patents, which are generally considered antithetical to the principles of unencumbered redistribution inherent in the open-source software development model, are increasingly perceived as a potential threat to the open-source Linux operating system. Most large software companies accumulate sizable defensive patent portfolios that they can use in elaborate cross-licensing agreements to avoid having to pay burdensome licensing fees or face the risk of litigation. Independent open-source software developers generally don't have the resources or desire to accumulate such patent portfolios, which puts them at a significant disadvantage in patent negotiations. The OIN, which counts IBM, Sony, and Red Hat amongst its chief members, aims to establish a broad, collective patent pool that can be used to discourage patent litigation against the Linux software ecosystem and to promote unencumbered patent access for open-source software development projects.
Although the OIN's inclusive and transparent patent cross-licensing model decreases the detrimental impact that the runaway patent system has on innovation in software development, it is not the best solution possible. In order to find a more permanent solution to the patent problem, companies like Google need to continue participating in the public debate over
patent reform.

Google shows off 'Android' software for mobile phones

SAN FRANCISCO — Google showed off its nearly completed mobile software system to about 3,000 computer programmers Wednesday, hoping to cultivate more services and advertising for people on the go.
Although brief, the demonstration at the Internet search leader's annual developer conference in San Francisco represented the most extensive public look so far at "Android" — an open-source platform being designed for "smart" phones and other mobile devices that surf the Web. Android was first announced nearly seven months ago.

The bells and whistles unveiled Wednesday included: a way to unlock phones by drawing a specific shape on the touchscreen instead of entering a password; bookmarks for favorite websites on the device's home page; a "compass" tool that automatically roams with the phone while a user looks at photographic images of a city map; a magnifying tool to zoom in on Web content; and a mobile version of the video game "Pac Man."
The demonstration relied on touchscreen technology similar to Apple's iPhone, but Android can also be tailored to work with a tracking ball, said Andy Rubin, who is overseeing the project.

Microsoft demos touch-screen Windows

CARLSBAD, Calif. — Microsoft said its next operating system will be made for touch-screen applications, an alternative to the computer mouse, and its top executives reaffirmed interest in joining forces with Yahoo.
Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer on Tuesday unveiled the iPhone-like touch-screen feature at The Wall Street Journal's "D: All Things Digital" conference, calling it "just the smallest snippet" of the Windows 7 operating system slated for release in late 2009.

Carbon Nanoribbons Could Make Smaller, Speedier Computer Chips

Stanford chemists have developed a new way to make transistors out of carbon nanoribbons. The devices could someday be integrated into high-performance computer chips to increase their speed and generate less heat, which can damage today's silicon-based chips when transistors are packed together tightly..

Air France plane gutted in Chennai

CHENNAI, MARCH 6: A Boeing 747 cargo aircraft of Air France was fully gutted after it caught fire on crash-landing at Chennai airport around midnight yesterday. The airport was inoperational for nearly 15 hours, and all the airlines were forced to either cancel their flights or reschedule them.
However, there was no loss of life due to the mishap. The pilot of the aircraft, Commander Jeans, and four other crew members (three Frenchmen and one Indian) had a miraculous escape. While one of the crew members came down through a rope ladder, the other four were brought down through the rear of the aircraft using the fire engine step ladders. However, the Indian crew member, who came down the rope ladder, sustained a leg injury, requiring surgery. He was operated upon at a private hospital in the city at about 3 pm since the pelvis bone of his right leg had opened up, doctors said. The AAI is hoping to make the runway completely operational by Saturday night, and normality in services is expected to be restoredby Sunday.

About 66 tonnes of cargo material loaded in the Jumbo Jet which came from Bangalore was completely destroyed in the fire. Sources said the aircraft was carrying about 20 tonnes of cigarettes, three cars, garments, medicines and chemicals. Several onlookers who saw the flame from the GST Road said they saw a ball of fire.

The aircraft with flight N. 6745, which came in from the Pallavaram end, is said to have crash-landed as the nose wheel did not open when the flight landed on the main runway. The aircraft came to a grinding halt after it travelled for about 7,000 ft of the runway, whose total length is 12,050 feet. A loud noise was heard for about two kms and smoke could be seen emanating from the nose of the aircraft. Fire tenders were immediately pressed into service.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chennai airport director Sudhir Kumar, briefing mediapersons, said the aircraft, which was scheduled to land at 11.22 pm on Friday night, landed at 11.29 pm. The aircraft `skipped' onelanding, went back and again came for landing, he said. ``The aircraft got bogged down and the runway was blocked. Since the aircraft was stranded in the middle of the runway, air services from and to Chennai were suspended. A `notem' (notice to airmen) was issued to this effect after the crash-landing.

Airport sources said the pilot of the aircraft had come in for ILS (Instrument Landing System) landing, but suddenly the pilot reported to the Air Traffic Control Tower (ATC) that he was not landing due to a technical snag and that he would circle and come again. He did not specify what the snag was, it is reported.

The frequency for the aircraft was changed and put to the radar controller. According to preliminary investigation, the pilot was asked by the radar controller if he needed any assistance, but the pilot replied in the negative. He circled over the Chennai airport and again came for landing.

However, this time, the pilot sought for visual landing and did not use the ILS facility. The ATCasked the pilot again if he wanted any aid, but the pilot said there was no problem and he was landing.

Cargo plane breaks in two at airport

An American Kalitta air cargo plane drove off the runway during take-off at Brussels's Zaventem airport and broke in two but there were no casualties.

"The happened during take-off of the plane, which was going from Brussels to Bahrain," a Zaventem airport spokeswoman said. "We don't know what caused it, there is an investigation under way."

The Boeing 747 aircraft's five crew all escaped via an inflatable emergency slide, fire brigade spokesman Francis Boileau said. Four of them had minor injuries.

Boileau said apart from its cargo of cars and equipment, the jet was full of fuel. He said the plane came to a halt some 200 metres from the runway and only 10 metres from a railway line.

"There was a danger of an explosion just after the because it was full of kerosene, about 100 tonnes of it, and there was a big leak when it broke," Boileau said, adding the fire brigade had secured the leak in 30 minutes.

"We see from the tracks on the runway that the pilot tried to stop the aircraft because he understood he could not bring it up into the air, and he drove it off the runway," Boileau said.

The Kalitta Air company's website says it is a Michigan Limited Liability Company owned by Conrad Kalitta.

It started in November 2000 with three Boeing 747 aircraft and the fleet has grown to a present total of 18 B 747 freighters.

INDIA'S BLACK MONEY...

Dishonest industrialists, scandalous politicians and corrupt officers have deposited in their illegal personal accounts the huge sum of about US$ 1000 Billion which have been misappropriated by them creating scandals and by corruption. This amount is about 13 times larger than foreign debt. This amount is such a big amount that from it 45 crores of poor people can get Rs. 100000/- each. This huge amount has been collected really from the people of India by exploiting the people of India and by betraying people of India. So really this entire amount belongs to the people of India. So all such property kept in to Foreign Banks must be declared as National property and it should be brought back in India. And for keeping such property in foreign banks illegally, all dishonest industrialists and merchants, scandalous politicians and corrupt officers must be punished at least for 10 years imprisonment to capital punishment. The function of delcaring such property lying in to foreign banks illegally as the national property can be done in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha only by making law. Government will not do this such law until there is heavy pressure on the Government from every corner of the country to make such law because those who have collected such illegal money and kept into foreign banks are themselves sitting in the parliament and in the Government. However, any autocrate Government has to yield to the heavy pressure of public opinion. Azadi Bachao Andolan is actively endeavouring to create such heavy pressure of public opinion to make such law. Once general public can understand the necessity of such law the best opportunity to create heavy pressure on Government is always at the time of elections.
People should declare not to vote for any candidate who does not promise in writing to make such law if elected in the parliament. If atmosphere is created every political party and every candidate of every political party will have to promise to make such law. Once all the candidates committed to make such law are elected in the parliament, such law to bring back all foreign money by delcaring national property will become a reality.
Once such law is enacted and passed by the parliament, all such property kept illegally in foreign banks as personal and private property will become national property. As per the rules of foreign banks, they can not keep national property. They can keep only personal property. As soon as such illegal personal properties are declared as national properties, the foreign banks have no other way except to return it to the Government of India.
Once this huge amount of black illegal money and property comes back to India, entire foreign debt can be repaid immediately in 24 hours only. After paying entire foreign debt, we will have surplus amount almost 12 times larger than the foreign debts. If this surplus amount is invested in earning interest, the amount of interest will be more than the annual budget of the Central Government. So even though all the taxes are totally abolished, then also Central Government will be able to maintain their extravagant expenses and huge wasteges of money as being done since last 50 years.
But we do not want to continue the extravagant expenses and huge wasteges of the Government. We want to stop it. The above argument is just to give the idea how huge amount our dishonest leaders, politicians, cricketers, film makers, administrators and rich persons have looted our country and to what extent they have accumulated the wealth. In fact, due to such a huge malpractice and exploitation, our 45 crores of people are dying of starvation. In fact, all these wealth belongs to such poor people from whom the wealth has gone to dishonest upper class of the society i.e. politicians, bureaucrats, cricketers, film makers etc. So legally and morally, both the ways, this entire wealth belongs to the people of India and so it is a national property. So to get it back from foreign countries, foreign banks strong movement is essential.
